Melaka – The Legal & Enforcement Division (BPP), Trade Union Affairs Department (JHEKS) has organised a Taskforce Workshop on the Review of the Trade Union Act 1959, Review of the Clean Draft of the Trade Union Act (Amendment) 2024 and the Trade Union Regulations (Amendment) 2024 at the Grand Swiss-Belhotel, Melaka.
This intensive four-day workshop aimed to coordinate and review the latest amendments to the Trade Union Act 1959 and related draft regulations, in line with efforts to improve the country’s trade union legal landscape. Participants comprised JHEKS legal and enforcement officers from across the country, who play a role in the formulation and review of labour policies and legislation.
The opening ceremony was officiated by YBrs. Puan Anita binti Ahmad, Deputy Director General of JHEKS, who in her speech emphasized the importance of thoroughness in reviewing legislation to ensure compliance with the principles of justice, transparency and protection of workers’ rights.

The workshop also provided participants with a space to discuss the implications of the amendments from an enforcement perspective as well as the challenges of implementation in the field. The focused technical discussions helped produce a more robust and comprehensive final draft of the clean text.
Congratulations and our deepest appreciation to all participants for their commitment and contribution of ideas throughout this workshop. Hopefully this effort will be an important step towards strengthening a progressive and resilient trade union legal system.
