The Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) through the Malaysian Trade Union Affairs Department (JHEKS) with the support of the Sabah State Government has organised the Sabah State Level Trade Union Day Assembly 2025 at ITCC, Kota Kinabalu, with the theme “Worker Solidarity as a Catalyst for Progress”.
The ceremony was officiated by YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Noor, Chief Minister of Sabah, and attended by over 2,000 union leaders, government agencies and industry stakeholders. YB Steven Sim Chee Keong, Minister of Human Resources, stressed that trade unions are the pillars of Wellbeing, Inclusion and Accountability within the framework of MADANI Malaysia.
Sabah has 94 registered unions with over 58,000 members. Since 2024, a total of 342 Collective Agreements have been signed, including between AMESU and six major plantation companies in Sabah, benefiting over 5,000 workers.
The launch of the MADANI Employee Card was also a success in Sabah with the participation of over 100 companies offering discounts on products and services of up to 30%.
Three housing developers are also offering special 5%-10% discounts to MADANI Worker Card holders for the purchase of their first home.
The ceremony also celebrated the success of the establishment of the Sabah Labour Advisory Council (SLAC) as a tripartite platform to strengthen the state’s more progressive labour policies.
As a continuation, the National Trade Union Assembly will be held on 6 September 2025 in Penang. KESUMA through JHEKS will continue to strengthen union leadership, labor education and solidarity networks to ensure that workers continue to be the drivers of national progress.
